UFO no more!

I have finally finished my crochet/ fleece Linus blanket! It only took me what? 4 months? Its nice to have that UFO completed!!!

I started this project one week before I went into the hospital. (see post here) I would have never thought that it would take me nearly 4 months to crochet a ruffle around a blanket!

I do know now just how important this cause is. And I am also very sorry I have not mentioned Project Linus in 4 months!

But I can tell you from first hand experience if you are handed a blanket, from someone who says I made this for you because I believe you can get well. It touches your heart.

Please Join with me and make a blanket for this wonderful cause!

Friday favorites wedding ring

Friday favorite assignment is:

"For this week's Friday Favorites, help me to plan this season's projects and post about your favorite quilt block or quilt pattern and be sure to tell why it's your favorite!"

First things first I have never made a quilt so I don't know much about them but I do know what I like.

My personal favorite is the wedding ring. Some would say because I have had so many wedding rings myself... so maybe I feel it symbolizes my life, LOL! HAR HAR um no...

I think its because its not a lot of little boxes to make up one big quilt. It is one big masterpiece! All blocks joining together to make one big unity block.

At one time I was told by a certain quilter that "I don't sew curves" so this pattern was out. They sew curves now.... ;-) and they need new patterns??

How 'bout it Sue? Are you up for it?

Bridges of Madison County

Alright I am a "bridges" fan. It is actually the movie that got me interested in Photography. So it has been a dream of mine to find a covered bridge and take pictures of it.

On my way home from treatment I spotted one. It was way off the beaten path and i just told Steve "oh theres a covered bridge do you think someday we can get there?"

Well leave it to steve he came home and map quested it. and knew where it was. and yesterday it was one of those "get me out of the house before I kill someone" days. So off for the covered bridge we went.

The little boy you see in this shot was riding his scooter with his buddie. as I was taking the shots, all i could think was "How great is your life? to be able to live on a hard top road where all the traffic is going to slow down and stop to see this bridge?" Its a kid's dream!

I don't know if I managed to capture the emotion of being that child, but I know I feel it when I look at it. That might just be because I was there.

Blue Berry Cobbler

When Blueberry's were in season I really wasn't in the "Lets bake!" mood. so all of the berries I couldn't eat fresh, went into the freezer. I knew eventually I would get to use them.

Today I made one of Ree Drummond's recipes. Those of you that have not been formerly introduced to this Genius, lets make your acquaintance today.

This Woman lives on a Ranch has a group of kids, a hungry husband, makes the most amazing food, and somehow manages to stay amazingly THIN!

Personally, I have always felt "you can't trust a thin cook," but I will happily eat not only my words but ANYTHING this woman puts on her site because she cooks like a... well... like a not so thin person.

Her recipe directions are so wonderful! Any trained monkey could follow her instructions. So even you can cook all of her wonderful recipes!

So I was showing My mother one of Ree's amazing recipes when I stumbled upon the cobbler recipes that I never made.

SHAME ON ME!

So today I had to, I just had to make this one

Can you believe that yummy Goodness??? Neither could we! That's why We ate the WHOLE THING!!

Apple Sauce Re-visited

After posting my Friday favorite yesterday, I realized that I failed to post a recipe with my Sauce! (HOW DARE I??)

So I you want some applecinnomy Yummyness in your house here's how you do it!

First thing you are gonna need is a food mill If you dont have one its gonna set you back about $20 unless you can find one second hand as I have its the way to go!

This handy dandy kitchen Gadget is a MUST HAVE for sauce. if its apple or tomato or just to get some of the extra seeds out of your Black berry Jam.

Get the biggest pot you have and put in your apples washed and cut into quarters. dont bother with seeds cores stems or peels we dont have to worry about them! TRUST!

Cook the apple quarters untill theres nothing but mush. Let it cool a bit Just so you dont burn yourself.

Put your food mill in the second largest pot you have. it should kinda "clamp" or rest easy on the lip of the pot. Pour in some of the apple mush. and start spinning the handle on your mill. Rotate your handle clockwise several turns and then one turn counter to free up the sieve. After a bit you will see the seeds stems and peels staying behind and all your yummy apple sauce in your pot.

Heres a hint you like pink applesauce? use red apples OR pop in two or three red Cinnamon decorator candies while you are cooking your mush.

after you have Milled all your sauce you can add your Cinnamon and sugar for your own taste. My family likes 2 cups sugar to 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon. although i have made it without anything.

I then fill my clean sterilized quart mason Jars and hot water bath them for 20 minuets.

Don't be fooled and think that its ok to just hot pack seal them ONE mold spore will ruin a very nicely planned meal in the middle of winter! There is nothing worse than to cook a pork roast to have with a side of homemade applesauce just to open it and find it all moldy!

Oh one more tip! this is a long process! you will want to cook your apples in the AM! so you can can before bed!

Apple sauce

Todays Friday favorite was what is your favorite thing about Autumn.

Mine is getting apples to make applesauce! There is nothing that makes me more ready for fall than to cook up a big pot of applesauce and get it into cans. It makes the house smell all applecinnomy and Yummy!

It also brings back some wonderful memories of my family and the times we have spent harvesting apples just for this purpose! Here is a photo of me with my parents at an orchard. Apples have been a long standing tradition. One that I plan on keeping for a long time!

Soft Molasses Cookies

This is an ANCIENT recipie! My grandmother (who has been gone since 1994) Got this recipe from her girlfriend Sadie Kilburn back in 1934(?).

My family assumes that due to the nature of the recipe came from Sadies Grandmother as well but of this we are not certain.

The original recipe called for Lard that has been changed to shortening.

The recipe also is meant to be a roll and cut out cookie, but frankly i do not have time or patience for that. So I wax paper tubed the dough, froze it, then sliced it. It worked fine without the bother and mess of rolling it out.

Soft Molasses Cookies
1/2 Generous cup of White Sugar
1 1/2 Cup of molasses
1 Generous cup Shortening
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 Egg
2 Heaping Teaspoons Baking Soda Dissolved in:
3/4 Cup Hot water (don't skip that step!)
1 teaspoon Ginger
enough flour to roll the dough out (aprox 7 cups)

Sprinkle cookies with white sugar
bake in 300 deg oven 10 mins?

do not over bake

Gourd Jack-o-lantern

I made this Gourd Jack-o-lantern for my mom to replace the ceramic one she broke last year. Perhaps next year I will be feeling well enough to make a ceramic one for her!

This was super easy to do! I washed it and cut the face out with My husband's dremel. Used some wood stain on it to give it color, and wired it with an old "window candle" . We usde a yellow bulb in it to give it the nice yellow color.

Patriot Day

Friday Favorites have been postponed due to the need to remember September 11th and the lives that were lost.

Yes, it seems like so long ago and that perhaps your life has changed greatly since that time. But take time to remember how lost and helpless you felt at that time. Remember the outrage you felt. Remember how there was an American Flag on every house, every car.

I Question you now, What has changed? Where is our Patriotism? What has happened to the flags? Certainly this was not just a Passing FAD?

Now I challenge you... Recapture that American Pride you had in the months following 9/11 Be proud of the country you live in. Show your patriotism not only today but every day!

Hessleguessle

There is an area around here that a bit of "lore" to it. Mostly that I personally do not believe. but it is a quiet area that is very flat on the top of a mountain. you can get there by car. so we went up for a "nature hike" I dont get to walk in the woods like i used to simply because I live in a valley and to walk up hill it jsut too much. but for an hour i got to wander around in the woods looking at this or that. It was just a wonderful day!

I snapped this Mushroom while i was there and it made me think, Doesn't it look like you could just see and Elf resting on it? HEE HEE

Bread finished

After much trial and error, I do believe that i have succeeded in making a loaf of bread all on my own. no bread machine just my two little hands and the ingredients. Of which i am quite proud of myself.

Does that mean I wont keep looking for a bread machine in every second hand store i go to? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! as soon as i can find one I am getting it!

Friday Favorites

A blog I follow has invited me to participate in their Friday favorites posts.

This is when she posts a favorite something and i respond with a favorite of the same thing.

I thought i would be fun to try out.

This Friday favorite is movies. I have many favorite movies, but my number one that movie I will watch it when every anyone says hey how about this one? It's always a yes, is "The Sound of Music."

Unfortunately it is NOT my husbands favorite so I don't get the opportunity to watch it as frequently as I would like. He will sit though it at Christmas time for me. Kind of a present to me.

So I always think of sprinkled cookies cold milk and song filling the house since my daughter and I know all of the words to all of the songs. Its a happy thing.

Now the hard part... which part? there are so many wonderful songs in this musical. But I think for a kick off of Favorite Fridays there is only one answer.

"My Favorite things"

This is not a clip from the movie but a wonderful sideshow that truly expresses at least to me, how this song make me feel anytime I hear it. My thanks to alantie2009 for putting this together!

Dead bread machine

I stripped all of the gears out of my bread machine. *sob*

then i borrowed my mothers bread machine only to find that she must have thrown out her paddle that mixes the dough on accident. *double sob*

so i am having to learn how to make it the way my grandmother did it. or just go to the store and buy frozen dough.... which i have been known to do. but i thought two days ago How hard can it be? after all that mchine had no trouble doing it. so i got out my bread machine recipies and tried the plain white one.

well I dont know what i did wrong but it raised only so far. and got a huge pocket of air then it fell. so we are trying it again today. I am thinking i didnt knead it enough on the second knead so i will try to correct that today.

I should just get a new machine.... maybe after i master this technique... I would love to one day show my grandchildren that my grandmother used to do it this way... lets just hope i wont do that for fifteen years or so!

my bird was back

My daughter was cleaning her rabbits pen yesterday, and had the rabbit in a "grass pen" but for some reason the rabbit didn't want to stay in it. then my daughter hears some chuttering and turned around to see our "bird" in the tree right behind her. apparently waiting for the big scary person to get away from the Delicious rabbit dinner she had put out for it.

We had about a half an hour to watch and take pictures of this wonderful bird. Michelle's chuttering that she heard we later matched up with a bald eagle call that we found online. so we are pretty convinced that this is indeed a juvenile bald eagle. we have sent our snapshots off to some experts for a "legal confirmation.

although, with more reserach, i am still not 100% convinced this could be a red tailed hawk juvenile too... you just never really know without years of education.

after showing these pictures to many people, the general idea is that this is a juvenile red tailed hawk NOT an eagle. Bummer
